Hopeful Hearts is a non-profit dog rescue in Ottawa, Ontario, created in late September 2007. Although we rescue dogs of all sizes, ages and condition, Hopeful Hearts was created especially to help fill a void in the local rescue world for senior and special needs dogs. These angels are most often turned down by rescues due to difficulty with finding adoptive homes and inherent vet costs. Recognizing the urgency for these dogs, Roz decided to step in and help.

Roz has been involved in the rescue world for approximately 20 years with the last 3 years being a very busy foster home for a local rescue group. In December 2006, Roz discovered an elderly dog in a local shelter that had little or no hope of adoption. Pooh Bear, a goldie mix, had lost her owner and was now completely alone at the ripe old age of 16.

In desperate need of dental work and a good grooming, Roz felt she could give Pooh a loving home for the last few months of her life. Pooh was the catalyst for the creation of Hopeful Hearts Rescue. Pooh walked into Roz's home, or should we say 'marched', and promptly took over the role of matriarch - teaching Sally (a Hurricane Katrina Dog) and Milly (a registered therapy dog and also a rescue) how genteel dogs behave!! It was definitely Pooh Bear 9-1-1 to the rescue. In January 2007, Roz again went out on a limb and brought in an elderly dog in liver failure from the Toronto Humane Society. Monica, a 14 year old afghan mix, had been handed over to cruelty officers in October of 2006 and was still waiting to find a home where she could live out her last few months. With the help of the RDIC (Rescuing Dogs in Canada Network), Roz was able to have Monica transported to Ottawa where she shuffled into Roz's home and heart; an angry, hurt but loving soul. As if that wasn't quite enough, Roz again accepted another senior into her home in June 2007. Teddy, a 15 year old Husky, had been apprehended by cruelty officers and was too close to the end of his time to put up for adoption. The shelter called Roz and Teddy joined Roz's ever growing menagerie and has brought both tears and laughter to her home with his silly antics and forgiving heart........
